SGA is looking for a Building Sciences Director to lead our Building Sciences team. The candidate will be part of our integrated in-house sustainability group, working closely with MEP engineers and architectural designers. The ideal candidate should be passionate about sustainability and resilience, self-motivated and self-directed, collaborative, and able to produce high-quality work products. This role will oversee all the sustainability and decarbonization aspects of the design for high-rise residential, office, and laboratory projects located in the Greater Boston area. In addition, the candidate will support and validate building energy modeling efforts, basic principles of engineering calculations, estimate energy usage, and help the client to implement decarbonization strategies for large urban real estate developments.
SGA works across large real estate developments including life-science buildings, campuses and universities. Our track record includes commercial, education, science and technology with a focus towards high performance and net-zero projects.
Key responsibilities will include:
Lead sustainability design charrettes with all major project stakeholders. Assist team in prioritizing progressive sustainability and energy strategies.
Conduct through leadership in building science conferences, papers, and industry events.
Market and grow the building sciences group within all SGA offices and expand to new markets and provide new innovative services.
Manage the development of LEED documentation required of SGA as sustainability consultant.
Lead and oversee the development of energy and decarbonization reports, solicit bids and select consultants/contractors testing and commissioning.
Oversee contract documentation and invoicing for MEP engineers , sustainability consultants and contractors.
Contribute to the collection, management and analysis of all quantitative and qualitative information to be included in SGA project proposals.
Develop, deploy and manage budgets for sustainability initiatives.

Requirements
Ph.D. or Master’s degree in architectural engineering, building science, energy and sustainability management or related fields.
Minimum 6 years of work experience, with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience in managing sustainability programs/initiatives.
Technical experience with green building design and working knowledge of the LEED rating system with demonstrated LEED experience (at least two LEED projects).
Additional experience with construction or consulting and managing projects.
Regulatory experience with City of Boston Article 37/Carbon Neutral filing, Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) and other local, state and federal approvals and trade standards (BERDO, ASHRAE, LEED, etc.).
Energy efficiency expertise including the electrification of systems, envelope performance, on-site renewable energy and renewable energy credits.
Experience with the execution of energy management strategies including the development and implementation of energy efficiency measures, energy program roadmaps, and performance reporting.
An intuition of building physics that enables the candidate to act as a resource for design teams and advise on the efficacy of proposed design solutions.
Experience leading or carrying out research initiatives that advance the practice’s understanding of how buildings function both technically and socially.
Ability to juggle multiple tasks, collaborate on large teams, and work well under deadlines.
Ability to develop business cases through the synthesis and communication of technical research related to environmental, economic, financial, and social impacts.
Certifications Required/Technical Skills
LEED AP and/or PHIUS certification
Perform detailed energy analysis using EnergyPlus, Openstudio and WUFI Passive
Perform detailed analysis using THERM, WINDOW, and WUFI
Javascript, Python, or similar coding languages
Knowledge of Radiance, DIVA, and Ladybug and Honeybee tools is a plus
