Design Architects have the opportunity and responsibility to program, design, and manipulate the physical environment to achieve practical and aesthetic objectives.
Required Competencies
Project Design and Analysis: Ability to analyze programmatic requirements and budget constraints to produce designs that address project criteria effectively; ability to plan and modify approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions
Technical Knowledge: Knowledge and understanding of building design and systems, and general construction processes from needs identification through construction documents
Communication: Ability to communicate, in graphic, oral, and written form, detailed and technical architectural and building/construction information, guidelines and standard/codes/regulations to various audiences to ensure that they understand the information and the message, and to seek their consensus approval
Responsibilities
Concept/Schematic Design – 30%
Develop initial concept options to respond to the client's needs
Develop and refine the selected concept into Schematic form
Create drawings to visually convey the solution in Schematic form to Owner (and Construction entity) – exterior form, materials, and major interior spaces, including plans, sections, elevations, and 3D images
Collaborate with Interior Designer, Project Architect, Project Manager and others in the development of the Concept and Schematic Designs
Final Design – 35%
Identify and document the Client’s Detailed Program Needs
Develop and refine the Design – exterior form, interior spaces, materials, colors, etc.
Collaborate with Interior Designer and others in the development of the Final Design
Coordinate with the Project Architect the technical development of the project to accomplish the design
Coordinate the architectural design with the site, structural, interiors, mechanical, and electrical design; engage in Integrated Design Workshop (IDW)’s
Assist the Project Architect and Interior Designer in the development of specifications
Architectural Programming – 15%
Meet with client representatives and other stakeholders to identify the issues/problems to be solved, and the client’s needs (and wants)
Review existing conditions to gain clear understanding of the site and/or building and the opportunities and challenges presented
Identify relationships of major spaces and key site/building activities
Develop a simple document that adequately summarizes the project goals, issues, and client’s needs
Construction Documents – 10% (could be more depending on the project)
Collaborate with the Project Architect and Interior Designer in the development/finalization of details, materials, finishes, and colors to support the design concept
Coordinate design details with civil, structural, interiors, mechanical, and electrical; engage in IDW’s
Construction Administration – 5%
Review and approve submittals for conformance to design
Respond to RFI’s regarding issues that impact design
Punchlist Review for design issues
Business Development – 5%
Develop Preliminary Design Concepts and 3D Images for Proposals & Interviews
Present Preliminary Design Concepts and Design Process at Interviews
