HED is seeking experienced well-rounded architects to join our Northern California studios co-located in San Francisco and Sacramento.  This role is responsible for the documentation of design and overall coordination of building systems from project inception through construction administration.  The position would supervise teams on small to large scale projects and assume responsibilities related to independent work, leading teams of supporting staff and consultants.  Architects at Level 4 are expected to work directly with and will be supported by the Architecture Discipline Leader to advance the state of the firm’s work and are encouraged to contribute to leadership of the Northern California studios.

TYPICAL DUTIES

• Participate in the development of the project story focusing on articulating goals and generating responding strategies. Enrich the design solutions with technical and regulatory expertise. 
• Coordinate with the project’s primary designer to ensure that client goals and strategies are being translated into appropriate results at each phase during design.  
• Responsible for leading the entire design team consisting of HED staff, engineering disciplines, whether in-house or external, and other technical experts to a fully coordinated, successful built project.
• Primary responsibility for project architectural design documentation at each phase of design, including production of specifications.
• Prepare and monitor Discipline Work Plans with input from the Architecture Discipline Leader to ensure appropriate staffing for project production.  Coordinate with Project Managers and Market Sector Leaders.
• Conduct material and product research as required for project development.
• Prepare and document required code research for projects.
• Responsible for coordination of assigned architecture staff members’ daily/weekly tasks in support of the design process.        Mentor junior staff to foster professional growth at all levels.
• Coordinate with HED’s Practice Technology specialists to ensure BIM and other technical aspects of the production process are in alignment with HED practice. 
• Attend/direct project meetings, both internal and external, and prepare and distribute minutes as required.
• Oversee and document interpretation and submittal reviews during bidding and construction administration.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Architecture Discipline Leader.

SKILL, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• 8+ years of progressive experience
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field
• Professional licensure preferred; at minimum being pursued
• LEED accreditation or other sustainability designation preferred
• Ability to work with consultants, clients and AHJ’s in a proactive and professional manner
• Ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and strong organizational skills
• Possess the ability to motivate and mentor staff, and effectively delegate work assignments
• Strong computer and graphic skills, and demonstration of REVIT proficiency
• Ability to independently develop construction details
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible.
• Ability to work well with others especially under deadline situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Capable of traveling to and from project sites for attending client, project and construction meetings. 
• Ability to access existing and new project sites for observation, investigation and evaluation purposes. 
• Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes. 
• Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
