About Environmental Works Community Design Center
Environmental Works Community Design Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community-based architectural firm founded to provide professional architectural, landscape architecture, and planning services to nonprofit organizations, municipal agencies, and under-represented communities throughout Washington State. Since our founding in 1970, we have provided feasibility/pre-development studies and complete architectural services for human services agencies, community facilities, affordable housing providers, and public art projects. With experience in both the public and private sectors, the staff of Environmental Works prioritize community involvement and optimizing limited resources. We create quality architecture and landscape architecture that sustain communities. Our proven strategies guide our design of facilities that are socially and environmentally sustainable. These strategies serve the core goals of conserving resources; promoting local economies (human, material, and natural); and careful adaptation of a building to honor a site’s natural and cultural conditions. Environmental Works was founded as a community design center, and 50 years later we retain a deep commitmen...t to community design. Community design is a collaborative design process that engages the community in critical planning and design decisions about their project’s layout, materials, and appearance. Community design empowers end users, and creates culturally responsive spaces. It builds community among neighbors and peers, strengthening relationships and building bridges between us all – especially valuable during these divisive times. We proactively and intentionally maintain an open and mutually supportive office culture. Information, expertise, lessons learned, and constructive criticism are shared throughout all of our work together. In this way, each project benefits from our combined knowledge base, each staff person grows in their capacity to serve our clients well, and the benefits of deep collaboration spread to the entire development team. Our office is organized into four studios: housing, community facilities, landscape, and special projects. Each studio is headed by an experienced architect with more than twenty years of experience. We work in teams within the office, with more experienced staff heading up the teams and working closely with support staff and consultants. We provide consistent project representation and staffing during the entire project, with backup from within the organization when needed.
