This is a senior management position on the Knowledge & Practice team, reporting to the Senior Vice President, Knowledge & Practice, responsible for leading AIA’s Sustainability and Resilience, Disaster Assistance and Communities by Design programs. This role is responsible for identifying, analyzing and monitoring the external environment related to these programs and provides expertise, research and data to inform AIA’s holistic response to issues related to sustainable and resilient practice and policy. The position will work with cross-functional teams to advise the organization on climate action, collaboratively develop the strategy and drive member engagement. Primary responsibilities include advising senior AIA leadership regarding trends in the transformation of practice related to driving a zero-carbon, equitable, resilient and healthy built environment and the development and management of AIA’s climate action strategy. The Managing Director will work closely with the Knowledge & Practice team as well as members of the AIA’s Management Team and the Senior Leadership Team.
Sustainability & Resilience
Serve as the internal and external champion for the AIA’s strategic initiatives on sustainability and resilience including the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Framework for Design Excellence and building impact around a holistic message and plan to support climate action for human and ecological health.
Direct the implementation of the AIA’ CAP through the Sustainability and Resilience Teams and across departments. Work closely with the staff leads to enable effective cross team strategies and a holistic approach to climate action. Be the primary advocate in the operating plan and budgeting process for all programmatic areas under the CAP.
Lead the development of and oversee the implementation of action plans for the various programs aligned with the CAP and Framework for Design Excellence including Disaster Assistance.
Serve as a Subject Matter Expert to programs across the AIA supporting climate action for human and ecological health.
Facilitate the accomplishment of projects aligned with the CAP and Framework for Design Excellence including the creation of practice tools and resources, education programs, policy development, and toolkits.
Foster effective component and member engagement with various stakeholder groups within the AIA network, including creating a member and chapter engagement plan in partnership with Component Relations Staff.
Guide and support work of leadership volunteers in implementing initiatives or work plan consistent with the greater goals of the Board of Directors and the goals of the strategic plan.
In coordination with other AIA teams, develop the strategy and support for the implementation and education of the Framework for Design Excellence to internal audiences, AIA members, policymakers and the public.
Develop the strategy and support for the development of key partnerships with groups outside of AIA that advance the AIA’s climate action initiative. Work with key internal teams to identify, develop and maintain strategic partnerships.
Lead the strategic development of the AIA Resilience Building Coalition. Support the staff lead in building this coalitions’ strategy to build impact in resilience initiatives.
Lead the strategic development of the AIA DDx and 2030 Commitment program. Support the staff lead in developing this database and program to build impact of building performance data in making our case for decreasing buildings effect on climate.
Lead the strategic development of the A&D Materials Pledge program. Support the staff lead in developing and implementing the program to build impact.
Communities by Design
Support the implementation of the Communities by Design philosophy of community engagement in existing and new programs tied to AIA’s Equitable Communities effort.
Oversee assessment of existing and new initiatives of the Communities by Design program including Design Assistance Teams, capacity building and training of community-driven engagement.
Serve as the Sustainability & Resilience team’s liaison to the AIA’s cross-team effort on Equitable Communities and related programs.
Work closely with the current staff to analyze and recommend new business models for expanding the program and increasing funding sources.
Other Leadership and Management Responsibilities
Lead multiple cross organizational efforts including those noted above and others as assigned.
Develop and oversee execution of plans for new business development opportunities in various sustainability/resilience programmatic areas within the department to generate new revenue streams in programmatic areas where feasible.
Develop internal disaster assistance protocol and coordinate implementation of program.
Mentor and coach professional and administrative staff to facilitate high performance in the workplace.
Develop and deliver regular communication of progress on achieving success.
Assess the team’s progress against strategic and operating metrics and provide reports on that progress.
Collaborate with internal and external partners in support of the Institute’s strategic goals, as well as specific program goals.
Works collaboratively with Managing Director, Knowledge Communities and Resources on Knowledge Community decentralized staffing model for KC’s related to the topics of sustainability and resilience.
Serve as the Institute’s spokesperson, as appropriate, on the programs and initiatives within the team and represent the CEO and SVP, Knowledge & Practice when requested in meetings.
Provide stewardship and oversight of the human and financial resources allocated to these programs (Sustainability, Resilience, Disaster Assistance, Communities by Design).
Manage the professional and administrative staff ensuring that annual program goals and development goals are established for each staff person. These goals are focused on individual growth and development, as well as on individual contribution to the strategic goals of the Institute.
Serve as an advisor to the Senior Vice President, Knowledge & Practice and other Senior/ Vice Presidents by providing briefing, developing materials and recommendations and serving as a sounding board on key decisions.

Bachelor’s degree in architecture, planning, environmental studies or related area with a minimum of 12 years of management experience in planning, development and implementation of complex programs or projects focused on sustainability and resilience, lead of sustainability and/or resilience initiative at a firm or association. MBA or MA in related discipline a plus, but not required. Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a leadership role required. Architectural background in education and/or experience is a plus but not required.
