The Sustainability Leader leads, manages, and further advances the Firm's design professions in sustainable design efforts and is an integral project teammate. Sustainable design efforts include without limitation; institutional green building rating systems, jurisdictional energy and high-performance buildings requirements and professional A/E/C practices. The Sustainability Leader leads and manages both Firm-wide and individual project initiatives regarding furthering the Firm's sustainable design mission, vision, and values.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Sustainability Leader also closely collaborates with our Marketing and Communications Team, project teams, and will be involved in external affairs as the public representative for the Firm's sustainable design efforts.
Graduate of Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.
LEED AP with Specialty (BD+C or ID+C) with LEED project experience.
WELL AP, Fitwel Ambassador, LBC Ambassador, and/or Certified Passive House Designer preferred.
Minimum of five years of professional experience related to sustainable design and the built environment, with prior experience in various institutional green building rating systems' project management and administration, including without limitation; International Living Future Institute (ILFI) Living Building Challenge (LBC), International WELL Building Institute WELL, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Center for Active Design Fitwel, U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED, Southface EarthCraft, Green Building Initiative, Inc. Green Globes, Building Research Establishment Ltd BREEAM, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Green Multifamily and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS).
Minimum of five years of professional experience related to sustainable design and the built environment, with prior experience in jurisdictional energy and high-performance buildings requirements management and administration, including without limitation; U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star, International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), ASHRAE 90.1, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 50001 and other applicable sustainable design codes, regulations and standards.
Well versed in principles of sustainable design, environmental analysis and building performance simulation.
Experience with energy modeling and building performance software and analytics such as PHPP, WUFI Passive and/or EQuest preferred.
Experience with environmental analysis software such as Ladybug, HoneyBee, DIVA, Therm, COVE tool, or Design Explorer I have no idea what these are.
Experience with jurisdictional sustainable design authorities' interface, communication, and documentation.
Familiarity with the New York City Energy Conservation Code and various Metropolitan Washington, DC sustainable design codes, regulations and standards preferred.
Proficient with MS Office Suite; Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; Autodesk Revit and Green Building Suite; Sketchup, and cove tool.
Effective experience leading, managing, and developing teams either directly or indirectly.
Effective experience communicating with the Firm's, professional and A/E/C thought leadership.
Strong management skills and ability to influence, prioritize and multi-task on multiple projects.
Proactive, analytical, detail-oriented and self-starting.
Excellent interpersonal, graphic, written, and verbal communication skills.
General responsibilities of the Sustainability Leader may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Attains a clear understanding of the Firm's vision and values regarding responsibilities of sustainable design.
Develops knowledge of the Firm's relevant projects and sustainable design resources.
Coordinates and collaborates closely with and supports Sustainability Coordinators and project teams during early design phases in implementing the six part, three-tier Sustainability Tier Achievement Challenge (STAC) to support the Firm's sustainable design foundations.
Leads the Firm's sustainable practices through enhancement of processes and increased focus on the its aspirational goals as they relate to resiliency and sustainability.
Coordinates and collaborates closely with Sustainability Coordinators, Project Sustainability Integrators (PSIs), Designers and Project Architects to obtain project information and ensure project graphic, written and analytical documentation is clear, complete, concise, and correct.
Assists Project Architects in exploring sustainable design alternatives.
Assists project teams with project LEED and other green building rating systems' Project Administration documentation, submissions, and responses.
Assists with meeting documentation and formulates and distributes project correspondence documentation.
Informs Principals, Project Managers and Project Architects of potential project opportunities and Team availability/capacity.
Periodically communicates with the COO regarding team's time allocations.
Researches sustainable design building strategies, concepts, assemblies, systems components, and materials as requested.
Assists in leading the Firm with the AIA 2030 Commitment and its reporting, the Architecture 2030 2030 Challenge and other sustainable design efforts, including participation in the CORE Committee, the Firm's leadership group advocating sustainable design vision, goals and thought process; and the Firm's STAC Program wherein PSIs collaborate with their project teams during early design phases to implement project sustainable design foundations.
Actively participates in and reports on professional A/E/C practice forums, conferences, and teaching / learning activities.
Mentors Sustainability Coordinators and less experienced Designers and offers advice, training, and direction.
Follows the Firm's filing systems, tracking logs, and archiving standards.
Demonstrates dependability in meeting task and project deadlines.
Architectural responsibilities of the Sustainability Leader may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs various tasks including but not limited to each of the following project phases: Conceptual Design/Programming, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents, Construction Procurement and Construction Contract Administration in collaboration with Project Architects.
Leads research of sustainable design codes, regulations, and standards in collaboration with Project Architects.
Guides document coordination activities of multiple project teams, including consultants.
Communicates methods to improve the "project progress" to Project Team Leadership
Other duties as may be appropriately associated with this role.
The Sustainability Leader manages and guides project-level Sustainability Coordinators directly and may supervise PSIs' management and administration of green building rating systems' documentation and communication. The position has no supervisory responsibilities regarding other design services.
