Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and supervises all the technical activities of the Department. In this capacity, this position has complete latitude for independent action and decisions within the general framework of Company policy and procedures. Initially, the priority is to improve project delivery and technical standards.
This position reports to the Principal
Responsible for planning and executing Annual Plan for the Department including Business Development, Technology, Human Resources, Finances and Operations
In coordination with the Principal and appropriate Discipline Directors, assigns Department manpower in the specialty areas as required for the best accomplishment of projects and utilization of personnel.
Keeps the Managing Principal and Principals informed of business development, project schedules, manpower needs, new work, client relations, personnel problems, financial results, and equipment, facility, and organizational needs.
Coordinates directly with Corporate Staff (Marketing, Finance) as appropriate to resolve development, technology, human resource, financial and operational matters affecting the Department.
Coordinates with the Principal in monitoring Quality Assurance Procedures for projects assigned to this Department.
In conjunction with other Directors, the Managing Principal and Principals, and in accordance with the firm’s Long-Range Plan, develops a one-year (short-range) Department Business Development Plan including:
Identification of existing and potential projects by client type (local, state, federal and private) and discipline.
Development of strategies and tactics to maintain existing clients and win new clients.
Participate in the office’s Client Contact Program.
Assists Discipline Directors in execution of the firm’s Discipline Business Development Plan.
Supervision, preparation, and coordination of proposals in his/her Department in coordination with the firm’s Managing Principal. Requests assistance from firm’s Directors, Project Managers, and Corporate Marketing as required to meet specific proposal needs.
Assist Managing Principal and Principals and corporate marketing staff in developing and updating corporate discipline promotional materials, including staff expertise, department capabilities, project experience, and technical approaches to markets within the discipline.
Must be familiar with the general details of all projects being worked on in their own Department.
With the Principal and the Project Manager in charge of the project, determines project personnel needs.
Supervises Project Managers in own Department and verifies that Project Manager is executing project in accordance with company policies and standards, including, but not limited to, establishing basic design criteria, project checking and quality control, use of engineering and drafting standards, standard guide specifications, cost estimating and control procedures, construction inspection, testing, technical and project administration files, and project close-out procedures.
Assists Managing Principal in recruiting of technical staff; participate in salary administration and evaluation programs; arranges for training programs; directs Department indoctrination and termination procedures and administers such awards of disciplines as are required to maintain an effective and orderly Department.
Monitors job status reports in own Department and takes appropriate action with Project Manager to ensure that projects are completed on schedule and within budget.
Reviews with Managing Principal all contracts prepared by Director or Project Manager to verify that provisions are in accordance with company policy and that man-hour budgets are sufficient to complete the contracted work prior to executing the contract. Contracts are then submitted to the Managing Principal for final corporate review.
Responsible for review of monthly project invoicing as well as assistance in collections if necessary.
Organizes own Department in such a manner that all personnel are productively and efficiently engaged. Takes appropriate action when Department utilization rates drop below budgeted levels.

7 + years leading multi-family, mixed use, office, architectural design projects is required.
Staff management experience.
Proficient to advanced working knowledge of Revit. Ability to lead teams of architects, designers, technicians, etc. through the various phases of the design projects. Ability to building an maintain good working relationships with new and existing clients.
Annual Productivity Goal: 80%
Fully engages as Director in one year.
