The Corporate Real Estate team is composed of Planning and Development, Airport Affairs and Environmental. These three teams work together to secure lease spaces, design and manage all major construction and renovation projects, and develop and incorporate sustainability initiatives and environmental obligations at our hubs, stations and city locations across the world.
Job overview and responsibilities
Senior Design Manager - in CRE's Planning and Development Group will oversee conceptual and detail design, facility programs, space planning, and the United Planning and Design standards. Projects will range from small to large scale facility projects in hubs, line stations, and commercial buildings. Design manager in this role will also perform analysis and provide programming recommendations for immediate and short term growth at airport facilities throughout the United network.
Manages self and team through conceptual space planning and design solutions, customer processing modeling including lobbies, ticket counters, security screening, hold room, boarding process, inbound baggage, ramp operation, and other support spaces. Understands and able to interpret ACRP, IATA, ADA, standard space standards, and United standards. Responsible for the management of design standards.
Leads the development of terminal and facility space plans, United support and operational space master plans, feasibility studies, utilization plans, simulation modeling, support for Corporate Real Estate in general planning tasks by performing research, gathering and analyzing data, and conduct field surveys to make strategic recommendations to meet long term company objectives.
Coordinates and collaborates plans with United Stakeholders including Network Planning, Global Ops, CRE and local Airport Operation leadership on short and long term plans.
Facilitates and/or creates new design specifications for finishes and standards inclusive of interior finishes, furniture, systems (MEP, baggage, gate services).
Responsible for the coordination of spec committees with all major stakeholders including Airport Operations, Tech Ops (Facilities Maintenance), Brand, Inflight, CSC, Flight Ops, Customer Contact Centers, Environmental, Airport Affairs, etc.
Responsible for the maintenance, management and update of existing design standards.
Collaborate with internal CRE and United enterprise stakeholders, as required, to ascertain, understand and collaborate on facilities or other airport infrastructure projects to ensure the airline interests are accounted for and addressed.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or Construction Management • 12+ years in experience in Interior Design, Architecture, Commercial Real Estate development • 8+ years as Project Lead over multiple stakeholders and consultants • Proven capability to innovate and influence change • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to learn quickly and adapt accordingly as projects continually shift and evolve • Ability to build strong internal and external business relationships • Knowledgeable in architecture and engineering techniques • Understand best practices in design, materials, and construction methodologies • Experience writing scope of work for design and engineering services, managing scope of work, and leading design focused discussions with the A/E and UAL stakeholders • Experience leading stakeholder groups, design teams, project management and construction management teams • Ability to quickly assess a situation, mobilize cross functional teams, and develop plans for meeting outcomes • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Ability to learn new software. • Presentation Skills; Adobe Suite - Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship • Approximately 25% domestic travel, occasional international travel required • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
Preferred • Registered Architect, Registered Interior Designer, LEED • 8+ years experience in Aviation Design and Planning. • Strategic long term planning, sustainable design, building facilities standards, Auto CAD, BIM, Project Management Best Practices • Familiarity with FAA Advisory Circulars and Orders; ACRP Standards (LOS); and International Air Transportation Association (IATA) planning standards are a plus. Knowledge of applicable design codes including ADA.
