The Vice President of Campus Planning and Design (VP) leads the development of thoughtful and robust plans for Chapman University’s capital construction programs, including the architectural and engineering designs for new buildings and major renovation projects as well as campus master planning and campus landscape projects. The VP will work closely with University leadership to establish multi-year plans and budgets for Chapman University buildings, landscapes and capital projects. The VP will work closely with the local community and with civic officials to entitle University projects and to maintain Chapman University’s longstanding commitment to the historic preservation of its local surroundings.
In partnership with the Vice President of Facilities Management, Deans, Provost, and Academic Leadership, develop and maintain a framework to guide the long-term development of the campus, including the project management and ensure alignment between Chapman Strategic Plans and campus planning goals.
Develop campus standards for architectural features.
In collaboration with senior leadership and appropriate campus constituencies, prepare under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) periodic Chapman University Specific Plan amendments for the cities of Orange and Irvine; represent the University throughout all public, Design Review Committee and City Council meetings.
In partnership with the Vice President of Community Relations, represent the University in dealing with the community, city, county, state and federal agencies on all matters pertaining to campus planning and design.
Oversee correct application of planning policies, procedures and governmental regulations, including CEQA and related regulatory compliance and advise campus leadership regarding legal challenges in collaboration with the Office of Legal Affairs. Ensure that projects are in compliance with all applicable guidelines, standards, regulations, policies, and procedures, including those for procurement, contract development and management, and building codes.
Manage the selection and work of design and planning consultants.
Graduate degree in Architecture required.
Must be a State of California Licensed Professional Architect. If not CA licensed, must obtain it within one (1) year of employment.
Knowledge and Work Experience
Seven (7) years of experience of design and campus planning is required, preferably at a university or college.
Five (5) years of senior leadership experience.
Advanced knowledge of architecture, urban design, city planning or landscape architecture, including in-depth knowledge of building design or planning in a large-scale college or university.
Advanced organizational, analytical, written and interpersonal communication skills, including strong negotiating skills and highly developed political acumen.
