Director of Facilities Planning and Campus Architect
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking a dynamic, collaborative leader to be its Director of Facilities Planning and Campus Architect. UNC Charlotte is a fast growing Research University with a student population of over 29,000 and over 9 million square feet of facilities. The University is expected to grow to 35,000 students in the next decade. Located on 1000 suburban acres in the northern section of Charlotte, North Carolina, the campus has 105 buildings housing classrooms, faculty/staff offices, teaching and research laboratories, a variety of one-of-a-kind learning/exploration spaces, and student success facilities. Holistic and integrated campus planning is vitally important to the success of the University's mission and its continued growth. The successful candidate will lead the University's efforts to develop UNC Charlotte as a nationally recognized campus of distinction.
The Director of Facilities Planning/Campus Architect is charged with planning and guiding the development of the campus in accordance with UNC Charlotte's Master Plan. The incumbent will maintain and update the Master Plan and the University's Design and Construction Guidelines. This position is responsible for overseeing campus design, visual appearance of buildings and grounds, site amenities, and compliance with the Design and Construction Guidelines. The Director is charged with developing and implementing comprehensive, executable five and ten-year capital construction plans in collaboration with Financial Services and in coordination with all divisions of the University. The individual selected will be responsible for university-wide space management and utilization, and real estate management including acquisitions and distributions. Further, the position is responsible for developing and managing the University's sustainability plans and programs. The Director will lead a staff of 12 in the execution of these duties.
Most importantly, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership competencies in building successful teams, building partnerships, facilitating change, managing conflict, and building trust. Taking the initiative, developing creative solutions, anticipating and solving problems are vital attributes. Focus on continuous improvement is essential for success in this position.
The Director will report directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities (Division of Business Affairs).
A bachelor's degree in architecture, building science, engineering, or community/urban planning is required. Architectural registration or Professional Engineer licensure in the State of North Carolina (or ability to gain such by reciprocity) is required. A master's degree in architecture or engineering is preferred. A minimum of six years of experience in campus planning, facilities design and life cycle management, real estate, and space management, or a combination of these experiences resulting in comparable knowledge and abilities is required.
